FairScope is a company that designs and manufactures scientific instruments for environmental monitoring. One of its core activities is supporting and industrializing open-source technologies.

PlanktoScope.org is an open-source project originally developed by an international community, and it refers to a compact, flow-through microscope designed for real-time imaging of plankton.

Thanks to its involvement from the early stages of the project, FairScope has developed a calibrated, ready-to-use version of the PlanktoScope — while remaining fully compatible with the open-source ecosystem.

In short: PlanktoScope is the tool, and FairScope is the manufacturer offering robust, field-ready versions, along with support, delivery, and ongoing development.

FairScope is based in Brittany, France and operates internationally.

Our main product is the PlanktoScope, an affordable, open-source imaging flow microscope designed for real-time plankton analysis. It’s available in both fully assembled and DIY kit versions, and is used by researchers, educators, and monitoring agencies worldwide.

Beyond these, FairScope is continuously exploring new frugal microscopy and sensor-based solutions to support participatory science and environmental monitoring.

Yes, FairScope is happy to consider participation in co-funded projects and research consortia. We’ve already collaborated with academic and institutional partners on various initiatives related to oceanography, aquaculture, and environmental monitoring.

If you’re preparing a proposal and think our expertise could be relevant, feel free to reach out to our development team at sales@fairscope.com — we’d be glad to explore how we can contribute.

We believe that open-source hardware and software foster innovation, collaboration, and accessibility in scientific research. By making our technology open, we encourage users to contribute, modify, and improve our tools.

Yes, we ship worldwide. Shipping costs and delivery times depend on the destination.
