OUR MISSIONS

FairScope Core Mission

At FairScope, we are committed to democratising access to observation and measurement tools for studying plankton, thereby making marine research more open, collaborative and sustainable.

We design open, repairable and accessible scientific instruments that enable researchers, educators, associations and citizens to play a part in understanding and protecting aquatic ecosystems.

OUR VALUES

What We Stand For

Innovation

We design innovative tools to support aquatic research, both in the lab and in the field.
Our flow-through microscopy system allows users to observe and analyze microorganisms directly in moving liquids, in real-time making research faster and more precise. Combined with a high-quality camera, it captures clear and detailed images.

Quantitative imaging provides essential data such as size, shape, and species count, helping researchers collect accurate data. The software automates image capture, simplifies analysis with advanced segmentation and connects smoothly with Ecotaxa for classification and deeper research.

Accessibility

At FairScope, accessibility is central to the way we design and build our tools. We create intuitive and user-friendly instruments so that researchers of all skill levels can use them with confidence.  Whether in the lab or in the field, our devices are portable and practical, making them easy to adapt to a wide range of situations.

Affordability also matters to us. We believe in fair pricing to make high-quality research equipment accessible to everyone, while staying true to our ethical and sustainable values. To help users get started quickly, we provide clear guides and open resources.

Open

We believe that sharing knowledge is key to moving science and environmental research forward. We share what we know, what we build, and what we learn through documentation, blog posts and social media. This way, others can explore, learn and contribute.

Our tools are fully open-source and open-hardware, with all the necessary parts, components and plans freely available on GitHub for anyone to use, modify and improve. We also supply turnkey scientific instruments that are designed for reliability and performance. Together, these tools reflect our mission to combine openness with practical solutions for the scientific community.

Ethics

At FairScope, ethics guide the way we design and build our tools. We don’t just aim to be innovative we also want our products to be repairable and sustainable. We make our tools easy to repair and maintain with clear guides and toolkits that give users full control over their technology.

We also choose durable and eco-friendly materials, like bamboo and use recycled cardboard packaging to limit our environmental footprint.

Finally, we care about the people behind the tools. we foster a supportive work environment where everyone feels welcome and valued.
